DONCASTER DOUBLES

Played at Hexthorpe Flatts on Sunday 19th June.

With several competitions having to be cancelled due to lack of entries, the first Doncaster and District Bowling Association individual competition of the season was the Doncaster Doubles, and it was won for the first time by Maltby Bowling Club's Darren Stevenson and Ross Meese. After a relatively untroubled passage to the final, they faced last year's runners-up, Keith Ryde and John Richardson of Armthorpe Welfare, and they again set off quickly, scoring 7 points in the first three ends, and scoring two more trebles to lead 13-3 after 7 ends. The Armthorpe pair began their fightback, though, and winning the next five ends closed the deficit to a single point, trailing 12-13. Two ends later and they were in front 15-14, and though the next few ends were shared, at 19-16 up it looked like Ryde and Richardson would go one better than on 2010. But with his side lying two shots, Stevenson played up with his last bowl to knock in his partner's short wood, making a maximum four to go back in front at the right time, and another point at the next end saw the Maltby players win 21-19.

PENSIONERS MERIT

Played at Denaby Welfare green, on Wednesday 6th July 2011.

After defeats in four finals in various Doncaster individual competitions, Parklands' Alan Broughton finally got his hands on a trophy when winning the Pensioners (Over 65s) Merit. Winning his first two games 21-12 and 21-10, Broughton faced Bawtry's Margaret Smith in the final, and after the early exchanges were shared, from 4-3 down he won 6 ends without reply to lead 12-4. Smith then closed the gap to 12-9, before the Parklands man extended his lead to 16-9 and 19-10. His opponent won 3 ends to make things interesting at 15-19 down, but Broughton scored a 2 at the next end for a 21-15 win.

Holder Keith Bullock was defeated in the first round by clubmate Ted Owens, Bawtry providing four of the last eight, and three of the four semi-finalists.

TRIPLES COMPETITION

Played at Brodsworth Welfare on Sunday 10th July 2011.

Darren Stevenson of Maltby Bowling Club made it a 1-2-3 in Doncaster competitions when he added the 2011 Triples title to the 2010 Individual Merit and 2011 Doncaster Doubles, making him the first person to hold all three trophies at the same time. Partnered by Lee Davies and Steve Barker, they reached the final with two close wins and a comfortable second round game, before facing the Parklands team of Alan Broughton, Eamon Costello and Dave Downey, who had put out the holders 21-20 in the first round.

The Maltby bowlers won the first four ends, but only scored one each time, allowing their opponents to take a 6-5 lead after nine ends. The jack changed hands at each of the next five ends, leaving the scores tied at 9-all, before the Parklands players went 12-9 up, the furthest they had been in front to that point. A two and a three put their opponents ahead once more, before the Parklands trio replied with the same to lead 17-14. A single and a four from Stevenson's team put them back in front at 19-17, but two down the next end left the scores at 19-all. The Maltby bowlers kept their nerve and scored two for a 21-19 win.

OVER SIXTIES MERIT

Played at Pilkingtons Pensioners on Monday 11th July 2011.

After waiting so long for his first Doncaster trophy, like the proverbial London buses two came together for Alan Broughton of Parklands as he added the Doncaster Over 60s Merit to the Pensioners Merit he had won five days earlier. Broughton becomes only the second bowler to win both these trophies in the same season, after the legendary Bill Wardman of Armthorpe who achieved the feat three times - in 1992, 1994 and 2006.

Broughton was on fine form all day, defeating two bowlers who had both won the senior trophy twice - John Clewer of Armthorpe Welfare and Sid Price of Denaby Welfare - in his first two games, before facing Bawtry's Barry Binks in the final. Binks also won his first two games comfortably, and a fine final was in prospect.

Broughton was first out of the blocks, leading 5-1, before Binks edged back at him, taking the lead at 7-6 and 9-7. Broughton levelled at 9-all, and won five of the next seven ends (which were all singles) to lead 14-11. Two pairs from Binks put him back in front, only for the Parklands man to record three twos to stand 20-15 up. Binks again rallied, scoring three singles to trail 18-20, but Broughton was not to be denied, winning the next end for a 21-18 win.

DONCASTER GENTS MERIT

Played at Denaby Welfare Bowling Club on Sunday 17th July 2011.

Armthorpe Welfare's John Richardson won the Gents Merit for the second time, beating first time finalist Steve Shannon of UNISON. Richardson, also last year's runner-up, had easy wins in his first two games before a slightly harder semi-final, while Shannon was made to fight all the way in his three games.

Richardson took an early 6-1 lead in the final, before his opponent closed to 6-5. The Armthorpe man then went 9-5 ahead, only for Shannon to level at 9-all. Richardson then used his experience to forge ahead 18-11, and despite a brief rally from Shannon, Richardson finished a 21-14 winner.

OVER 60S DOUBLES MERIT

Played at Rossington Welfare on Wednesday 20th July 2011.

Alan Broughton of Parklands completed a clean sweep of veterans titles in Doncaster this year when he added the Over 60s Doubles to the Pensioners Merit and Over 60s Merit that he had already won. Partnering clubmate Mick Coulson, they met the Bawtry pairing of Keith Bullock and Ted Owens in the final.

The Parklands pair signalled their intentions with a score of three at the first end, but soon found themselves 5-4 down, and the Bawtry players were ahead 11-9 after eleven ends of the game. But Broughton and Coulson then moved up a gear, winning six of the next seven ends to lie 18-12 up and looking comfortable. Bullock and Owens then won four ends themselves to narrow the gap to a single point at 17-18, but their opponents kept their nerve to win two of the next three ends for a 21-18 win. Broughton thus becomes the first player to win all three veterans titles in the same season.

DONCASTER INDIVIDUAL MERIT

Played at Roundwood Bowling Club on Saturday 23rd July 2011.

Armthorpe Welfare's John Richardson won the Doncaster Individual Merit for the sixth time, putting him two wins ahead of his nearest rival, after emerging from a very disappointing field of only 12 competitors. Richardson, as he has done in the past, got better as the day went on, winning 21-15 in his first game, and 21-12 in his second. In the final he played Matthew Holmes of Yorkshire Main, and signalled his intentions by scoring two at each of the first three ends. A relieved Holmes won the next two ends, before Richardson won the next nine to lead 19-2. His opponent briefly rallied, winning four of the next five ends, before Richardson scored the point he needed for a 21-9 win.

PRESIDENT'S SHIELD

Played at Hexthorpe Flatts Bowling Club on Sunday 14th August 2011.

Woodlands Park's Andy McIntosh won the 2011 President's Shield competition, for bowlers with an individual handicap of 4 or more. McIntosh, who only took up bowls last year after a successful snooker career, won six games on the day to get his hands on the trophy in only his first attempt in Doncaster individual competitions.

In the final he played the much more experienced Brian Gee of Wickersley Social Club, and quickly extended his 7-6 handicap lead to 11-6 before Gee scored his first point. For the next eight ends neither played could retain the jack as the game see-sawed, and Gee trailed 13-17, before McIntosh went within a point of victory at 20-13. Gee won two more ends to make it 20-16, but the Woodlands player scored the winning point for a 21-16 win.

14 year old Natasha Jackson of Yorkshire Main surprised a lot of people on the day, reaching the semi-finals before losing out to Brian Gee, and two other juniors also took part. Holder Barbara Binks went out in her second game, as did 2008 winner Matt Holmes, while 2009 winner Martin Scott lost at the quarter-final stage.

ALLAN HARIES MEMORIAL TROPHY

Played at Adwick St Lawrence Bowling Club on Sunday 28th August 2011.

The Allan Haries Trophy, for pairings consisting of one bowler over the age of 18 and one aged under 18, was won this year by the father and son team of Keith and Adam Dawson of Yorkshire Main. While Adam had already win the Doncaster Juvenile Handicap in 2010, it was Keith's first trophy win in 37 years of bowling.

Although they had beaten the fancied pairing of Graham Fox and Adam Jones of Woodlands Park in the semi-finals, the Dawsons started the final as second favourites against the Pilkingtons Recreation pairing of Craig Rumney and Hannah Brown, who had won their three previous games to 9, 7 and 3. But the Yorkshire Main players upset the form book again, taking a 7-0 lead before their opponents scored, and allowed them only one further point. Dawson senior was christened 'Awesome Dawson' by members of the watching crowd as he consistently backed up his son by producing winning bowls at nearly every end, winning the game 21-2 in just 16 ends.

HOSPICE COMPETITION

Played at Adwick St Lawrence Bowling Club on Monday 29th August 2011.

Andy McIntosh of Woodlands Park added the Doncaster Hospice Competition trophy to the President's Shield he won earlier on the month, defeating last year's runner-up Alan Broughton of Parklands in the final. Broughton has now lost three times in the final of this competition. McIntosh breezed through his first two games of the day, before being made to fight a little harder in his next two. But in the final, starting 7-3 up on handicap, he never looked in any danger, and although Broughton closed to 6-9, the Woodlands man won the next six ends to lead 19-6, and three ends later finished a 21-8 winner.

MIXED DOUBLES COMPETITION

Played at Harvesters Bowling Club, Elmfield Park on Sunday 11th September.

After losing out in the final of the Allan Haries Trophy, the Pilkingtons Recreation pairing of Craig Rumney and Hannah Brown made amends somewhat when winning the 2011 Doncaster Mixed Doubles competition. After two comfortable wins in their first two games, they had a slightly harder task in the semi-final before winning 21-13. In the final they played Hilary Bennett and Terry Mosley of Yorkshire Main, and after scoring a single at the first end, they found themselves 7-1 down. A run of four winning ends saw Rumney and Brown go 9-7 ahead before their opponents levelled at 9-all. Three ends later the score was 12-12, before a telling four and two gave the Pilkingtons pair an 18-12 lead. Mosley and Bennett could only score one more as their opponents finished 21-13 winners.

Holders Liz Hall and Danny Hallas went out in the first round as their opponents in last year's final, Denise Allin and Richard Curtis, exacted their revenge with a 21-19 win.

DONCASTER CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS COMPETITION

Played at Denaby Welfare Bowling Club on Sunday 2nd October.

Darren Stevenson of Maltby Bowling Club picked up the final Doncaster and District Bowling Association trophy of 2011 when he won the Champion of Champions competition.

A disappointing turnout saw only 7 of the 14 invited bowlers taking part, but Stevenson was quickly into his stride in the first game, scoring 4 pairs against opponent Paul Morgan without reply. Morgan eventually found a little of his form, but was always trailing and lost 21-11. Stevenson had a more difficult game in the semi-final against Steve Shannon, with the man with the blue woods leading 6-2, 12-8 and 16-13, but he could only manage two more chalks as the Maltby man completed his comeback with a 21-18 win.

In the final Stevenson met Alan Broughton, who has had a fantastic year in Doncaster, winning 3 competitions and being a beaten finalist in two more. Sadly he completed the unwanted hat trick as Stevenson again shot out of the stalls, leading 6-0 after three ends before Broughton steadied the ship with three singles. Stevenson then scored five points without reply to lead 11-3, and from there he wasn't going to let it slip, always keeping in front, finally crossing the finish line at 21-10.
